Capitals Trim Camp Roster to 53 in First Round of Cuts

Waiver risk will shape the final choices before the Oct. 7 roster deadline.

Washington made nine cuts on Sept. 23, reducing camp from 62 to 53 with seven players assigned to AHL Hershey and two returned to junior teams.
None of the players cut hold NHL contracts, so their moves to Hershey or junior do not require waivers.
General manager Chris Patrick said only about one to two roster spots remain open for opening night.
Several bubble players would need to clear waivers to be sent down, including Sonny Milano, Hendrix Lapierre, Justin Sourdif, Dylan McIlrath, Ethen Frank, and Vincent Iorio.
The roster must be set by 5 pm ET on Oct. 7 after five more preseason games, with reporting indicating Justin Sourdif projects to stick and Clay Stevenson likely heads to Hershey unless an injury changes the goalie picture.
