Cape Town Seizes 4,634 Litres of Alcohol as Festive Operations Intensify

Officials say lasting safety gains require changes in drinking behavior.

  • The City’s liquor pound total reached 4,634 litres by 28 December, more than doubling from 1–21 December with over half taken in the Christmas week surge.
  • Law Enforcement made 155 arrests in the past week and issued nearly 6,000 fines, while Metro Police recorded 52 arrests and 3,166 notices and officers recovered multiple firearms.
  • Traffic Services logged over 43,000 offences, impounded 156 public transport vehicles, executed 951 warrants and made 57 arrests, including 50 for drunk driving.
  • The Public Emergency Communication Centre handled 1,850 incidents over the weekend, including 119 fires, 132 assaults, 59 domestic violence cases and 19 instances of self-harm.
  • Provincial traffic officers reported 98 arrests between 15 and 21 December with 56 for DUI, and the City reported ongoing alcohol disposals at the Ndabeni Pound near the 3,000-litre mark.
