Cape Town Minstrels March as City Appeals Order to Provide Venue for January Event

The city faces a court mandate to fund an alternative venue from 1 January with only limited Athlone Stadium dates on offer.

  • The Western Cape High Court ordered the City of Cape Town to identify and pay for a suitable venue for the CTMCA event starting 1 January, reaffirmed in a late-night ruling by Judge James Lekhuleni.
  • The City filed another appeal on Friday to be heard by a full bench and separately appealed an order it says demands an unavailable venue on the requested January dates.
  • CTMCA’s protest march is underway on 3 January along the historic District Six route after a street parade permit was declined but permission for the protest was granted.
  • Officials say only mid-week January dates and one weekend in February at Athlone Stadium are available, an offer the CTMCA views as unsuitable for its plans.
  • CTMCA’s lawyer said the group may return to court and urged a round-table resolution, noting that uncertainty has already forced many teams to withdraw due to costs.
