Cape Town Metro Police Make Two Drug Busts in Lwandle and Bellville

The City’s safety chief cites the cases as evidence for broader policing authority to pursue supplying syndicates.

Overview

  • After a routine traffic stop in Strand, officers searched a Lwandle home with permission and found about 54.46 grams of tik and 603 Mandrax tablets behind a fridge, arresting a 44-year-old who was detained at Lwandle SAPS.
  • Foot patrol officers at the Bellville taxi rank intercepted a suspected deal and arrested a 33-year-old carrying 591 Mandrax tablets in a backpack, with the suspect taken to Bellville SAPS for further investigation.
  • Both suspects remain in custody and the seized drugs have been confiscated pending case processing.
  • Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the seizures show the scale of the problem and urged expanded policing powers to target the syndicates that supply street dealers and drive gang violence.
  • City reports show sustained enforcement activity, with Metro Police making 121 arrests and issuing 2,920 fines for the week, Law Enforcement making 176 arrests and issuing 6,378 notices, and LEAP officers confiscating four firearms.
