Capcom Moves to Transform RE Engine Into an AI-Generation Game Engine

REX aims to shorten AAA development cycles by using AI to automate code creation, run automated test plays, publish select engine technologies for external model training.

Overview

  • Capcom announced at its Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 on Saturday that it will evolve its in-house RE Engine under a program called REX to make the engine usable by AI-driven development tools.
  • REX will introduce specific tools such as Re:Dox for unified data handling, RE:UI for AI-assisted tool optimization, RE:Runtime for group animation processing, and RE:Flows to convert design ideas into a common programming language for AI to read.
  • The project will move parts of RE Engine to a more common programming language so AI can generate code and run automated test plays that check for bugs and speed QA processes.
  • Capcom says it will publish some engine technologies online so others can use them for AI training, a step that raises practical questions about what training data will include and how company IP and community use will be managed.
  • Company leaders stressed that AI is intended to augment creators rather than replace art production, and the move fits a broader industry trend noted by Google Cloud that AI is already embedded in modern game development.
