Canva Launches Craft, Its First In-House Image-Generation Model

Canva says owning Craft will cut AI costs while enabling editable, layout-aware image creation that ties directly into its design and developer tools.

Overview

  • Canva launched Craft on Thursday, October 22, making it the company’s first publicly available, homegrown image-generation model built by Canva Research.
  • Craft uses a two-stage, planning-first design where the model maps layout, scale, visual hierarchy, and text details before generating pixels at up to 2K resolution and roughly 30 aspect ratios.
  • The model was trained on millions of human-made Canva templates such as posters, social posts, presentations, and infographics so outputs can convert into layered, editable designs via Canva’s Magic tools.
  • Craft is available to all users in Canva’s Dream Lab, accessible to developers through the Canva API, and Canva plans agent support via the open Model Context Protocol while building lower-cost variants called Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast.
  • Independent benchmarks rank Craft near the top of image models with category wins for portraits and landscapes, but hands-on tests show mixed results on some design prompts, underscoring room for improvement even as Canva seeks tighter cost and product control.
