Candela's Hydrofoil Ferry to Revolutionize Waterborne Public Transport

The P-12 vessel, still in testing, is set to enter service in Stockholm in July, promising faster and more energy-efficient waterborne transport.

  • Candela, a Swedish electric boat maker, has unveiled its new P-12 vessel, a hydrofoil ferry designed to carry 30 passengers at a maximum speed of 30 knots (56 kph or 35 mph), considerably faster than other electric passenger ferries.
  • The P-12 achieves its speed and efficiency with carbon fiber hydrofoil wings that lift the boat out of the water, reducing drag and saving energy.
  • The vessel is still in testing but is set to enter service in July between the Stockholm suburb of Ekero and the city center, cutting the travel time from 55 minutes to 25 minutes.
  • Candela's technology reduces the energy per passenger-kilometer by 95% compared with the diesel ships currently transporting passengers across the Stockholm archipelago.
  • The company hopes that cities like San Francisco, New York, and Venice will lead the electrification of waterborne public transport.
