Cancer Research UK to Close Nearly 200 Shops Over 18 Months and Shutter Online Marketplace

Rising costs, weaker footfall, competition from resale platforms prompted the overhaul to safeguard research funding.

Overview

  • Ninety stores will shut by May 2026 with up to 100 more closing by April 2027, leaving about 320 locations trading.
  • The charity will close its online marketplace in early 2026, ending sales of donated goods on reselling platforms.
  • Roughly 600 paid roles are at risk with up to 3,000 volunteers affected, and the charity plans redeployment and support.
  • The strategy includes opening 12 larger superstores by 2028, adding to 46 existing sites, with a projected £12.4m uplift over five years.
  • Closures will be determined by financial contribution, lease terms and geography, following an £8m deficit in 2023–24 and earlier income declines.
