Canal Once Regains Control of Its Facilities After IPN Occupation

Visible damage to the broadcaster's historic videoteca has prompted federal investigations, triggering inventories and technical assessments.

Overview

  • Workers led by Canal Once director Renata Turrent retook the installations on Sunday, August 2, after an occupation that began around May 20–21 by a small group of IPN students and some teachers.
  • Preliminary inspections by Canal Once, the Secretaría de Educación Pública and the Fiscalía General de la República found visible disorder and reportedly broken archival material in the channel's videoteca, and authorities have opened investigative files to determine the scope of damage.
  • Canal Once maintained most of its broadcasts from alternate sites during the occupation and has started inventories, peritajes and phased technical work to restore equipment, studios and archival storage.
  • Students and some witnesses say the re-entry was not peaceful, alleging chains were broken and they were prevented from removing belongings, while officials say the recovery was carried out with notaries and outside observers to avoid force.
  • Because the videoteca holds more than six decades of national audiovisual heritage, the outcomes of the inventories and investigations could determine restoration costs, legal responsibility and the timeline for returning historic programming to the public.
