Canadians Cut U.S. Travel for Seventh Month — July Returns Down 32%

Overview

  • Statistics Canada reported 2.6 million Canadian return trips from the United States in July, down 32.4 percent year over year and marking a seventh straight monthly decline.
  • Land crossings by Canadians fell 35.8 percent to 1.9 million, while air returns declined 16.2 percent to 563,500.
  • Roughly 3.3 million U.S. residents visited Canada in July, down 3.0 percent, making it one of only two non‑pandemic months since 2006 when more Americans visited Canada than Canadians returned from the U.S.
  • U.S. trips accounted for 65 percent of all Canadian travel abroad, and total outbound travel by Canadians fell 24.2 percent in July.
  • Trips to Canada by overseas residents rose 10.3 percent to 999,600, as experts cite tariffs, enforcement actions and exchange‑rate concerns for reduced U.S. trips and tourism operators report stronger staycations.
