Canadian Workers Push Back Against Four-Day Office Mandates

A recent Angus Reid survey finds most Canadians prefer home-based work despite banks and major firms rolling out stricter office requirements

People walk through Toronto’s financial district on June 1, 2022. While office towers emptied out during the pandemic, many workers are now being mandated to come back all or almost all days a week.

Overview

  • Nearly 60 percent of working-age Canadians say they would choose to work mostly from home, rising to 76 percent among those with prior remote experience
  • TD Bank, RBC, BMO and Scotiabank have mandated four days in the office each week this fall, and companies such as Rogers and Starbucks are introducing similar requirements
  • More than half of employees ordered back for additional in-office days report feeling upset, and almost a quarter admit to working fewer days on site than mandated
  • Among workers not yet asked to return, only 28 percent would go back without hesitation, 32 percent plan to comply but seek new jobs and 24 percent say they would likely resign
  • Legal experts warn that pandemic-era remote work agreements may be contractually binding and could trigger constructive dismissal claims or require human rights accommodations
