Marina Stakusic, a 19-year-old Canadian, defeated top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (0) in a dramatic round of 16 match at the Guadalajara Open.
Stakusic, ranked 155th in the world, fought back from a 4-0 deficit in the third set and saved four match points to claim victory.
This victory marks Stakusic's first career win over a top-20 player and her first appearance in a WTA quarterfinal.
Stakusic will face fifth-seeded Magdalena Frech of Poland in the next round, who defeated Ashlyn Krueger 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In other matches, fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia of France advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will meet sixth-seeded Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.
