Canadian Synagogue and Jewish Center Targeted in Attempted Firebomb Attack Amid Rising Antisemitism
Montreal Jewish Community Faces Anti-Semitic Violence, Amid Surge in Hate Crimes Following the Israel-Hamas War
- Canadian authorities are probing into an attempted firebomb attack on Congregation Beth Tikvah, a synagogue, and Federation CJA, a Jewish community center in the suburb of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, near Montreal. They found remnants of a suspected Molotov cocktail and detected minor fire damage.
- The attack, which occurred overnight, didn't result in any injuries. Yair Szlak, President and CEO of Federation CJA, expressed relief that the attack took place at night and no one was harmed.
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has denounced the incident, while reiterating the government's commitment to work with Jewish communities to combat antisemitism.
- The incident aligns with a larger pattern of an uptick in both antisemitism and Islamophobia in the wake of the Israel and Hamas war. Montreal police have reported 48 hate crimes or incidents against the Jewish community and 17 against the Muslim community since October.
- Antisemitic incidents globally have seen a spike over the past month, with synagogues frequently targeted. Similar attacks were carried out on a Berlin synagogue recently.
