Canadian Retailers Roll Out Indigenous-Designed Orange Shirt Day Tees

Artists use culturally rooted designs to channel remembrance through charitable retail campaigns.

Overview

  • Winners and Marshalls Canada commissioned Anishinaabe artist Jenny Kay Dupuis for this year's shirt, with proceeds directed to the Orange Shirt Society.
  • Walmart Canada selected Brooklyn Rudolph through the Indigenous Proud program, with sales benefiting the Orange Shirt Society and the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.
  • Dupuis's "Hearts in Harmony" features Grandmother Moon, a crane, turtle and fish, plus forget-me-not flowers as symbols of memory, resilience and intergenerational connection.
  • Rudolph's design shows two children holding hands under an eagle and the Cree Keewatin star, reflecting unity, love and the idea of returning home; she said the nationwide rollout surprised her.
  • Other fashion retailers, including Aritzia and Joe Fresh, are running Indigenous-artist campaigns as Orange Shirt Day is observed on Sept. 30 to honor Phyllis Webstad’s story.
