Canadian firefighter dies battling Northwest Territories wildfire as record blazes rage

  • A firefighter from Fort Liard, Northwest Territories died while battling a wildfire near his home community on Saturday.
  • The firefighter sustained fatal injuries while combating a blaze that started on July 7, southeast of Fort Liard.
  • Wildfires across Canada have set records for total area burned and impacted air quality in the U.S. and Canada.
  • There are currently 89 active wildfires burning in the Northwest Territories, which have burned nearly 867,000 hectares of land so far this year.
  • Another firefighter, Devyn Gale, was killed by a falling tree while battling a wildfire in British Columbia on Thursday.
