Canadian Army Reorganizes Into Three Purpose-Built Divisions

The redesign is meant to make the force more deployable and better prepared to fight large-scale combat by aligning combat units, training and sustainment to new mission priorities.

Overview

  • The Army formally changed its structure on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, replacing four geographically based divisions with three divisions focused on manoeuvre (foreign/large-scale combat), defence of Canada, and support.
  • CFB Edmonton held a signing ceremony and parade to stand up the 1st Canadian (Manoeuvre) Division under Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland as the primary force for large-scale deployments and crisis response.
  • The historic 3rd Canadian Division was moved to the supplementary Order of Battle and its units were redistributed: regular force troops into the 1st Division, reserve brigades and Canadian Rangers into the 2nd (Defence of Canada) Division, and support elements into the Support Division.
  • War games held at Valcartier that used Russia as the adversary exposed shortfalls in air defence, long-range fires and command-and-control, prompting the Army to abandon a standalone Protection Brigade in favor of modular protection capabilities that can be attached as needed.
  • Army leaders say implementation will be iterative, with the new Support Division and the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre in Kingston guiding realignment, but they warn that personnel shortages and equipment gaps will drive procurement, exercises and annual course corrections going forward.
