Canada’s Second-Worst Wildfire Season Looks Set to Burn Into Autumn

Higher-than-normal temperatures through September will likely keep hundreds of active fires smouldering into fall.

  • Federal data show 7.8 million hectares burned so far in 2025, making it the second-highest annual total after 2023.
  • There are 707 active wildfires across Canada, with 68 blazes still out of control mainly in the prairies and British Columbia.
