Statistics Canada says the crime severity index decreased four per cent last year after three annual increases in a row, largely due to a decrease in non-violent crime.

Overview

  • 2024 marks the first national CSI decrease since 2021, reversing three consecutive post-pandemic rises in crime severity
  • Non-violent offences led the downturn with a six per cent drop in property and drug crimes
  • Motor vehicle theft plunged 17% and reported child pornography offences fell 15% but remain higher than pre-pandemic levels
  • The violent CSI edged down one per cent as homicides fell four per cent to 788 and intimate-partner violence against women increased
  • Nanaimo and Lethbridge saw the biggest regional CSI declines—16% and nearly 19%—and local leaders are using CompStat data, new police hires and social agency partnerships to sustain the trend
