Overview
- Global Affairs Canada added the warning to its United States page on September 29, noting some travellers with an “X” gender marker could face additional scrutiny or entry restrictions.
- The advisory says U.S. federal systems are shifting to request sex assigned at birth on processes including visa and NEXUS applications, passenger manifests, passport applications and Social Security forms.
- Ottawa warns that already issued U.S. visas may be reviewed or revoked and that U.S. permanent resident status can be terminated after reassessment, including for prior convictions or prolonged absences.
- NEXUS applicants must now select male or female, reflecting program changes that no longer accept the “X” designation for new or renewed cards.
- The update follows President Trump’s January directive limiting federal recognition to male and female, which a federal judge temporarily enjoined in June as litigation proceeds; CBP says gender markers alone do not render travellers inadmissible, and about 3,600 Canadians hold the “X” marker.
