Canada to Require All New Vehicles to be Zero-Emissions by 2035

New Regulations Aim to Ensure Adequate Supply of Electric Vehicles to Meet Growing Demand

  • Canada is set to announce new regulations requiring all vehicles sold in the country to be zero-emissions by 2035, according to multiple reports.
  • The new rules, dubbed the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, are designed to ensure that enough electric vehicles (EVs) are available in the Canadian market to meet the growing demand.
  • Under the new regulations, 20% of all new car sales must be zero-emission vehicles by 2026, 60% by 2030, and 100% by 2035.
  • Automakers can earn credits based on the number of EVs they sell, with the cleanest cars gaining more credits. Credits can also be accrued by automakers for investing in EV charging infrastructure and for rolling out more EVs before the regulations begin in 2026.
  • The move is partially driven by concerns about other countries, such as the U.S., leading the zero-emission vehicle market.
