Overview

  • Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in Berlin that Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean Co. are the two finalists to supply Canada’s next submarines.
  • The plan would replace four Victoria-class boats with up to 12 conventionally powered submarines designed for extended under-ice operations and year-round service on three coasts.
  • Carney is touring TKMS’s facility in Kiel and says he intends to visit Hanwha’s facilities in South Korea in October.
  • Public Services and Procurement Canada says it is aiming for the first new submarine to be delivered by 2035.
  • A senior official says Canada expects an economic return from the chosen supplier, potentially through long-term maintenance work in Canada.
