India and Canada Complete Third Round of CEPA Talks in Ottawa

Securing preferential market access for Canadian goods would deepen supply links to help both sides pursue a USD 50 billion trade target by 2030.

Overview

  • Negotiators finished a five-day third round of talks in Ottawa held July 6–10 and reported positive progress across multiple negotiating tracks toward a year-end 2026 goal.
  • Sessions covered detailed, technical chapters including trade in goods and services, intellectual property, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and technical barriers to trade.
  • Leaders from both countries have set an ambition to conclude the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of 2026 with an eye to the G20 leaders’ meeting in Miami.
  • Canada announced that Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu will lead a Team Canada business mission to India from October 12–16 and Global Affairs Canada has opened applications for firms to join.
  • The talks follow a 2023 diplomatic rupture over allegations tied to Hardeep Singh Nijjar and aim to translate political repair into stronger trade ties and supply‑chain links that could boost business opportunities on both sides.
