Overview

  • June marked the first monthly job increase since January as part-time hiring drove an 83,100-job gain
  • Wholesale and retail trade led growth with 33,600 new positions, followed by 16,700 in health care and 10,500 in manufacturing
  • Agriculture and transportation shed 6,000 and 3,400 jobs respectively while the layoff rate remained low at 0.5%
  • Unemployment among returning students stayed elevated at 17.4% despite the overall employment rebound and long-term joblessness rose
  • The report precedes the Bank of Canada’s July 30 policy decision, and strong labour data have pushed money markets to favour holding rates even after U.S. tariff threats
