Overview

  • The Canada Disability Benefit provides up to $200 per month to eligible individuals aged 18 to 64 who hold the Disability Tax Credit and whose income and family situation qualify them.
  • Ottawa began accepting applications on June 20 and plans to review submissions by June 30 to issue the first payments in July, with a two-year window for retroactive claims starting July 2025.
  • Applicants can apply online via the CDB portal, in person at Service Canada offices or by phone, and some Disability Tax Credit recipients will receive invitation letters by mail.
  • All provinces and territories except Alberta have committed not to claw back their own disability supports when federal payments start.
  • Disability advocates warn the benefit falls short of addressing poverty, while Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu says it will strengthen autonomy by allowing recipients to use funds as they see fit.
