Canada Marks Fifth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation With Calls for Faster Action

The 10th anniversary of the TRC report sharpened calls from Indigenous leaders to deliver measurable progress.

Overview

  • On Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged to “match remembrance with responsibility” at the Remembering the Children ceremony, as Gov. Gen. Mary Simon said meaningful progress is underway but “much work remains.”
  • Some attendees protested the government's new major projects legislation, Bill C‑5, which Indigenous leaders have criticized as undermining their rights.
  • Indigenous Watchdog counts only about 14 of the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action as completed, with many others in progress, stalled or not started.
  • Cities and institutions lowered flags, lit landmarks orange and hosted events nationwide, while broadcasters including APTN, CBC and CHEK carried live programming.
  • Officials and media highlighted support resources for survivors, including the National Residential School Crisis Line (1‑866‑925‑4419) and the Hope for Wellness Help Line (1‑855‑242‑3310).
