Canada Launches Colour-Coded, Impact-Based Weather Alerts

The upgrade translates forecast confidence plus expected damage into clear colours that signal risk at a glance.

Overview

  • Environment and Climate Change Canada activated yellow, orange and red levels across Warnings, Advisories and Watches to show severity and expected risk.
  • Meteorologists will use an Alert Colour Matrix with new Impact Guides that combine weather models, real-time observations and forecast confidence to describe likely effects on people, property and communities.
  • Yellow denotes hazardous conditions with moderate, localized or short-term impacts, orange signals likely significant and possibly multi-day impacts, and red flags very dangerous, potentially life-threatening events with extensive disruption.
  • Updated alerts are available now on Canada.ca/Weather and through the free WeatherCAN mobile app on Android and iOS.
  • The rollout aligns with World Meteorological Organization practices as part of a broader public weather program modernization, with further forecasting and alerting improvements slated over the coming year.
