- The defense ministers of Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and Canada met in London and on July 21, 2026 announced Canada’s entry as GCAP’s first observer nation.
- As an observer Canada will receive conditional access to specified classified information on aircraft performance, participating companies and confidentiality rules but will not join joint development or pay program shares.
- Canadian officials are reported to be weighing future purchases of the aircraft and a possible move from observer to full partner if it suits procurement needs.
- Program partners say widening the participant and customer base is meant to secure export markets, lower the program’s large development costs and expand interoperability across Indo‑Pacific and European/Atlantic forces.
- Other countries, including Germany and reportedly Saudi Arabia, have shown interest in GCAP and officials will likely focus next on firming export prospects and how observer access could lead to deeper industrial or procurement ties.
