Canada Joins GermanNorwegian Type 212CD Submarine Program

Leaders say the move will boost NATO northern defenses by creating an interoperable trilateral fleet that expands industrial ties.

Overview

  • Canada has agreed to join the GermanNorwegian Type 212CD programme and intends to buy up to 12 identical conventional submarines, a purchase described by officials as the country’s largest defence procurement.
  • Norway will begin receiving its new Type 212CD vessels in 2029, with Canada’s first deliveries scheduled for the early 2030s under the joint build plan.
  • When the programme concludes, the three navies will operate up to 24 identical submarines, which officials say will simplify training, operations and maintenance and strengthen NATO’s ability to monitor northern sea areas.
  • Norwegian officials say the deal will create defence‑industrial work for Norwegian companies, which already supply components for the programme and are slated to provide parts for Canadian vessels as well.
  • The leaders framed the agreement as the start of a long‑term security partnership that extends beyond defence into investment, energy, artificial intelligence, space and critical minerals and that aims to share responsibility for transatlantic security.
