Overview

  • Fifty-two laboratory-confirmed salmonella cases have been reported across Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba, with nine hospitalizations and no deaths.
  • Tests linked the outbreak strains to Salmonella Havana and Mbandaka in both patient samples and recalled Habibi pistachio kernels.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled products from Habibi, Al Mokhtar Food Centre and Dubai-brand pistachio and knafeh milk chocolate sold in Ontario, Quebec and online.
  • Some of the recalled pistachios were distributed to bakeries and may have been used in baked goods, widening the scope of potential exposure.
  • Officials estimate the true number of infections could be 26 times higher than reported and warn additional cases and recalls may emerge as testing continues.
