Canada Expands Salami Recall to Include Soppressata Salami Sweet and Quebec

The CFIA warns the recall could grow following an outbreak that has sickened 84 people, hospitalized nine.

Labels from Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot and Bona brand Mild Genova Salami are seen in this July 15 composite of handout images.

Overview

  • Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet was added on July 15 to a recall that already included Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot and Bona Mild Genova Salami.
  • Recalled salami products identified by UPC codes have been sold in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec, and may have been sliced or used in deli sandwiches and prepared foods.
  • Health officials say 67 of the confirmed cases are in Alberta, 17 in Ontario, one in Manitoba and one travel-linked illness in British Columbia.
  • The outbreak strain shows resistance to common antibiotics, including ampicillin and streptomycin, complicating treatment for severe cases.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is investigating the outbreak further and urges consumers to verify UPC and lot codes, then discard or return any recalled salami.
