Premier Tim Houston makes an announcement Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Halifax about four designated offshore wind areas off the province's coast.

Overview

  • The Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia have jointly designated French Bank, Middle Bank, Sable Island Bank and Sydney Bight for future wind energy development.
  • Designated areas cover 12,549 square kilometres off Nova Scotia’s coast and mark the first step in a broader 40 GW offshore wind ambition.
  • Parcels within the four zones will be identified for a first call for bids targeting five gigawatts of capacity by 2030.
  • Western/Emerald Bank has been deferred pending further study of fish conservation zones and military use.
  • Public consultations prompted slight boundary reductions in French Bank and Sydney Bight to address environmental and stakeholder concerns.
