Canada and Australia Transit Taiwan Strait in Joint Passage

Taiwan calls the voyage a show of support for international navigation rights.

  • The Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Ville de Québec and the Royal Australian NavyHMAS HMAS Brisbane completed a transit of the Taiwan Strait on Sept. 6–7.
  • Canada’s Joint Operations Command said the passage was a routine operation conducted in accordance with international law as part of Operation Horizon.
  • Taiwan’s foreign ministry and its ambassador to Canada welcomed the voyage as reinforcing the strait’s legal status as an international waterway.
  • Chinese state media quoted the PLA Eastern Theater Command condemning the move as provocative and reporting that forces monitored the ships.
  • Taiwan said it was the second Canadian transit of 2025 and the first by an Australian warship this year, with Ville de Québec the seventh Canadian vessel to make the passage in recent years.
