Canada and Alberta Commit $125M to Plant 12M Trees in Province

New funds launch immediate tree-planting under Canada’s climate targets to enable rural and Indigenous communities to steward restored habitats.

  • The federal and provincial governments have formalized a joint investment of over $125 million under the 2 Billion Trees Program to support four major afforestation and habitat restoration projects in Alberta.
  • The Alberta Afforestation initiative led by The Carbon Farmer will receive $13.8 million to transform Peace Country farmland with more than six million trees, sequester carbon and create seasonal and full-time jobs.
  • Rewilding Canada managed by Project Forest will use its $2.93 million grant to plant one million trees across various sites including the Siksika Nation reserve, enhancing biodiversity, soil health and Indigenous land stewardship.
  • High Yield Afforestation by First Indigenous Biomass Future Inc. will plant over 100,000 trees on 65 hectares near Cardiff with its $558,968 funding and provide employment opportunities for Indigenous women and youth.
  • The expansion of Alberta’s Caribou Habitat Recovery Program secured $83.7 million to plant nearly five million trees by 2030 across 15 caribou ranges to bolster long-term species recovery and deliver community training.
