Canaan Posts $97.6 Million Q2 Loss as Equipment Demand Collapses

The company is selling crypto and buying back shares to preserve cash while warning of much lower revenue in the quarter ahead.

Overview

  • Canaan, which reported results on Tuesday, posted about $31.9–$32.0 million in second-quarter revenue, missing its prior $35 million–$45 million guidance.
  • The company recorded a $97.6 million net loss in Q2 driven largely by non-cash charges including a $25.3 million inventory write-down and a $9.2 million equipment impairment.
  • Mining operations produced 243 BTC in the quarter and made up roughly 55% of revenue, giving a positive pre-depreciation cash contribution even as product sales plunged.
  • Canaan converted part of its crypto treasury after quarter-end, selling 3,952 ETH and 54 BTC for about $13.9 million and using proceeds to fund accelerated ADS repurchases totaling roughly 16.4 million shares for $7.4 million as of Sept. 8.
  • The company ended June with about $66 million in cash but disclosed 1,117 of its 1,915.5 BTC were pledged as loan collateral and guided Q3 revenue of just $11 million–$15 million, signaling continued weak miner demand and tight pricing for equipment.
