Campbell Soup VP Sued After Secret Recording Captures Derogatory Rant

The ex-employee alleges retaliatory firing after reporting a recorded tirade that he says includes an admission of on-the-job drug use, with Campbell conducting an internal review.

Overview

  • Robert Garza filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court naming Campbell Soup Company, vice president and chief information security officer Martin Bally, and supervisor J.D. Aupperle.
  • Garza says he recorded more than an hour of Bally disparaging Campbell’s products as being for “poor people” and making derogatory remarks about Indian employees.
  • The meeting was a restaurant sit-down initially arranged to discuss Garza’s salary, and he says he recorded it because he sensed something was wrong.
  • Garza alleges he reported the remarks to his supervisor in January 2025 and was terminated on Jan. 30, 2025, in retaliation, a claim central to the suit.
  • The filing says the audio includes Bally admitting he often came to work high from marijuana edibles, and Campbell stated the comments, if accurate, are unacceptable and that it is actively investigating.
