Overview

  • The initial phase will house up to 1,000 migrants in immigration removal proceedings and will expand to 5,000 beds in the weeks and months ahead.
  • The soft-sided tent facility offers legal access, visitation, recreational space, medical treatment and accommodations for disabilities, diet and religious needs.
  • ICE personnel will have full management and operational authority over Camp East Montana and will refer migrants with final removal orders to ICE Air Operations.
  • The site is part of a broader Department of Homeland Security request to decompress overcrowded detention centers nationwide.
  • Advocacy groups including the NAACP and Vote Common Good have denounced the expansion and called for protests over alleged inhumane conditions.
