Caminito del Rey Opens Spain’s Longest Suspension Bridge

Built to follow geological advice, the 110‑metre crossing aims to improve visitor safety and broaden the trail’s tourist offering.

Overview

  • The 110‑metre suspension bridge was inaugurated Wednesday, June 10, 2026, and is now open to visitors as an alternative final section of the Caminito del Rey.
  • The structure is 1.2 metres wide, reaches up to 50 metres above the gorge, has a steel mesh (tramex) deck and a total weight of about 38 tonnes with the main span at 17 tonnes.
  • Installation required helicopter lifts to place the span into the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes and included 300 metres of new path, safety railings, fibre‑optic cabling, surveillance cameras and a control hut.
  • The €1.5 million project was paid for with revenues from the Caminito concession and follows geological recommendations from the universities of Granada and Jaén to improve visitor safety by rerouting the final descent.
  • Since its 2015 reopening the Caminito has drawn more than 3.2 million visitors, supported roughly 685 jobs and generated an estimated €64.1 million in economic impact in 2024, with officials saying the bridge will strengthen local tourism and services.
