CAMe Lifts Ozone Contingency in Valley of Mexico After Air Quality Rebounds

Improved winds brought ozone back within norms by 6 p.m., ending Phase I and setting a return to the regular Hoy No Circula program on Saturday.

Overview

  • Authorities ended the Phase I ozone alert at 6:00 p.m. Friday after meteorological conditions shifted, reducing ozone levels across monitoring stations.
  • CAMe had activated the contingency Thursday when hourly peaks reached 160 ppb in Cuajimalpa and values above the 90 ppb norm were logged at multiple sites.
  • The Doble Hoy No Circula remained in force from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday, restricting hologram 2 vehicles, specified hologram 1 and blue 0/00 plates, and some freight and LP gas delivery units.
  • Exemptions during the alert included electric and hybrid vehicles, emergency and essential services, school transport with authorization, vehicles for people with disabilities, and motorcycles.
  • Health guidance urged avoiding outdoor activity from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., reducing solvent use and refueling outside peak hours, with officials continuing to monitor and ready to reinstate measures if pollution worsens.
