Cambodian Opposition Politician Assassinated in Bangkok

Lim Kimya, a former Cambodian MP and vocal critic of Hun Sen's regime, was shot dead in a targeted attack linked to political repression.

  • Lim Kimya, a 74-year-old former opposition MP and dual Cambodian-French citizen, was fatally shot near Bangkok's Khaosan Road after arriving from Cambodia with his wife and uncle.
  • Thai police have issued an arrest warrant for the suspected gunman, identified as a former Thai marine and motorbike taxi driver, who was apprehended in Cambodia hours after the attack.
  • The assassination has been widely condemned as a politically motivated act, with opposition leader Sam Rainsy accusing former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen of orchestrating the killing.
  • The Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), of which Lim was a member before its dissolution in 2017, described the killing as a brutal attack on political freedom.
  • Human rights groups have called for an impartial investigation, highlighting growing threats against Cambodian dissidents, even those in exile, and the use of transnational repression in the region.
