Overview

  • Inaugural operations began with an Air Cambodia flight from China that received a water salute as 160 passengers arrived.
  • The first phase is designed for up to 13 million passengers annually with a long-term goal of 50 million by 2050, and officials put the project cost at about $2 billion.
  • The terminal was designed by Foster + Partners and built by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau, with funding from the government and OCIC through Cambodia Airport Investment Company.
  • Authorities say the new facility replaces the capital’s old airport, though AFP reported it has closed while Prime Minister Hun Manet previously said it would be maintained for military and emergency use.
  • The NGO Sahmakum Teang Tnaut estimates around 2,000 households were displaced or faced eviction during construction, a figure the civil aviation regulator did not confirm while saying most disputes are nearly resolved.
