Caltrans to Shut Highway 37 for 55 Hours This Weekend

The agency says the emergency repairs will protect an 11-mile flood-prone stretch from winter storms by raising lanes to about three feet, installing temporary concrete barriers.

Overview

  • Caltrans will close Highway 37 in both directions for 55 hours, starting at 10 p.m. Friday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday to complete emergency repair work on the corridor.
  • Crews will work on an about 11-mile segment between Walnut Avenue at Mare Island and Sears Point and will raise portions of the roadway roughly three feet while demolishing a median and installing k-rail barriers.
  • Motorists must use roughly 40-mile detours that route traffic onto Highways 12, 29 and 121 and should expect large increases in travel time for the roughly 40,000 daily users of 37.
  • Preparatory night closures were delayed by rain earlier this week and Caltrans says the schedule remains weather-dependent with additional short closures planned in mid-November to move temporary barriers.
  • These actions are short-term emergency measures ahead of El Niño storms and are separate from larger, longer-term resilience projects that still require substantially more funding.
