Overview
- Caltrans announced overnight westbound lane closures starting Oct. 21 and a full 55-hour shutdown beginning 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, to shift traffic and carry out the emergency work.
- Crews will demolish the center median, install temporary K-rail to move traffic onto westbound lanes, and raise about 1,000 to 1,300 feet of roadway roughly three feet to shore up sections near Mare Island and Sears Point.
- The agency warns detours will sharply increase travel times for roughly 40,000 daily users and says a typical 10-minute trip could take four times as long over the weekend.
- Officials plan additional overnight closures in mid-November if weather allows, and Caltrans says the schedule remains dependent on incoming storms and tides.
- The emergency repairs are separate from a longer-term plan to widen or build a causeway on Highway 37 that has $100 million authorized but still lacks the hundreds of millions of dollars needed for a full solution to chronic Bay flooding and sea‑level rise.
