Caltrans Shuts Topanga Canyon and Other Mountain Routes as Storms Renew Mudslide Risk

Officials cite saturated slopes and warn that another round of showers late Sunday could prolong closures.

Overview

  • A 3.6-mile segment of Topanga Canyon Boulevard (SR-27) from Pacific Coast Highway to Grand View Drive is fully closed as of Saturday.
  • Angeles Crest Highway is closed from 3.3 miles east of Newcomb’s Ranch to State Route 138, and State Route 33 is shut between Fairview Road and Lockwood Valley Road.
  • Los Angeles County Fire Department issued evacuation warnings for burn-scar neighborhoods including the Hurst fire and Mandeville areas starting 10 a.m. Saturday.
  • Forecasters expect 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain across most of the region and 3 to 4 inches in mountain communities, with widespread showers returning Sunday evening.
  • Caltrans says crews will monitor conditions daily, keep the Palisades Fire recovery zone on PCH open with standby teams, and reopen only when weather and road conditions improve.
