Overview
- An LA Times/University of California survey conducted Oct. 20–27 finds roughly 60% support for Proposition 50, with 38% opposed and very few undecided voters.
 - Roughly five million ballots have already been cast by late October, and among those early voters 67% backed the measure, while voters planning to cast ballots in person on Election Day lean 70% against it.
 - Partisan preferences are sharply polarized, with 93% of Democrats in favor and 91% of Republicans opposed, and support strongest in coastal urban areas such as the Bay Area (71%), Los Angeles County (69%), and San Diego County (60%).
 - Proposition 50 is a legislatively referred constitutional amendment advanced by SB 280 signed on Aug. 21, setting a Nov. 4 special election after voter registration closed Oct. 20 with same‑day registration still available at vote centers.
 - Backers frame the proposal as a response to GOP-driven redistricting moves in states such as Texas encouraged by President Donald Trump, and analysts project it could add up to five Democratic seats in the U.S. House if approved.
