California's plug-in electric car sales reached a record high in 2023, with over 440,000 new registrations, representing almost 25% of the total market.
Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 were the top-selling cars in California, with the Model Y registering 132,636 new units, more than the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V combined.
Despite Tesla's dominance, its share of the BEV market in California dropped to 60.5% in 2023 from 71% in 2022, indicating a growing competition from other automakers.
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe was the best-selling Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle in California in 2023, with 13,351 new registrations.
Rivian Automotive witnessed the largest increase in new registrations, with 10,297 new vehicles registered in 2023, marking a jump of 142.7%.
