California Woman Avoids Jail in Marijuana-Induced Stabbing

Bryn Spejcher's defense of 'cannabis-induced psychosis' leads to probation and community service sentence.

  • Bryn Spejcher, a 33-year-old California woman, avoided jail time after stabbing her boyfriend 108 times in a marijuana-induced psychotic episode.
  • Spejcher's defense, 'cannabis-induced psychosis', was based on the testimonies of renowned psychiatrist Dr. William Wirshing and prosecution expert Dr. Kris Mohandie.
  • Spejcher had only smoked marijuana less than a half-dozen times before the fatal stabbing, which occurred after she consumed a strain with a 31.8% THC level.
  • Spejcher's boyfriend, Chad O’Melia, provided the marijuana but did not show her the warning on the label indicating it was for 'High Tolerance Users Only'.
  • After being convicted by a jury of involuntary manslaughter, Spejcher received just two years of probation, 100 hours of community service and no prison time.
