California Voter Guide: Key Dates and Rules for the Nov. 4 Proposition 50 Special Election
Ballots begin mailing Oct. 6; officials outline registration cutoffs, return deadlines, drop-off options, signature fixes.
Overview
- Online voter registration closes Oct. 20; those registering within 15 days of Nov. 4 must complete same-day registration in person and request a ballot at a county office or voting center.
- All active registered voters are mailed a ballot, with counties starting shipments Oct. 6 and state voter guides already distributed in September.
- Mail ballots must be postmarked Nov. 4 and received by Nov. 12; voters may return ballots by mail, at any official drop box, voting center or polling place statewide, or through a trusted person who cannot be paid per vote.
- County officials verify return-envelope signatures, separate ballots from envelopes to protect privacy, and notify voters with missing or mismatched signatures so they can cure issues before certification.
- Thirty counties offer expanded in-person early voting for up to 10 days, and the state provides multilingual instructions as well as job-protected time off to vote with up to two paid hours required.
