California to Enforce Gender-Neutral Toy Sections in Large Retail Stores

California has passed a law requiring large retailers to have a gender-neutral section for children's toys and childcare items, which will take effect on January 1, 2024.
Retailers with 500 or more employees that fail to comply with the law face a fine of up to $250 for a first violation, and $500 for subsequent violations.
The law was introduced by Assemblyman Evan Low, who hopes it will encourage businesses to avoid reinforcing harmful and outdated gender stereotypes.
Despite some backlash from conservative groups and individuals who see it as government overreach, the law has been praised by LGBTQ+ advocates.
California is the first state in the nation to adopt such a law.
