Overview

  • Zane Wach was discharged on Aug. 15 and returned to Valencia after more than two months of hospital care.
  • His father says Zane hallucinated snowmen and Kermit the Frog during the descent before walking off a ledge, leading to a six-hour wait for rescue and an airlift to a Las Vegas pediatric trauma center.
  • He sustained head trauma, a broken ankle, a broken finger and a partially broken pelvis, and was placed in a medically induced coma with about two weeks of intubation.
  • After a transfer to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, he began standing, walking and speaking in mid-July and is now swimming, reading, playing piano and spending time with friends, though he has short‑term memory loss.
  • He will skip the school year for intensive therapy, and his father says doctors expect a full recovery even as a hip issue from calcium buildup could require surgery, with Zane aiming to hike again when he is able.
