California Suspends Raw Milk Producer After Bird Flu Detection

Raw Farm, a Fresno-based dairy, faces quarantine and recalls following the detection of H5N1 bird flu in its milk products.

  • California health officials have suspended all operations and distribution of Raw Farm products after bird flu virus was found in milk samples during state testing.
  • The California Department of Food and Agriculture has placed Raw Farm's herds and bottling facilities under quarantine, halting the sale of raw milk, cream, and other dairy products produced after November 27.
  • No human illnesses have been directly linked to the contaminated milk, but 31 bird flu cases have been reported in California this year, mostly among farm workers exposed to infected animals.
  • Raw milk advocates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Trump's nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, have criticized federal regulations on raw milk, despite warnings from public health officials about its risks.
  • Raw Farm CEO Mark McAfee has claimed he is being considered for an FDA advisory role on raw milk policy as the company works to address the regulatory and public health concerns raised by the bird flu detections.
